Outdoor Living Skills

Rock Climbing

Students learn the fundamentals of rock climbing including, safety equipment (harness, helmet, belay device), and climbing commands.  Students also have a chance to climb to the top of our 25 foot indoor climbing wall.  This class is available during the fall, winter and spring.

Range Archery

Students learn Olympic target style archery including several types of bows, safety equipment and line procedures.  All students are given a chance to hit a bulls-eye.  This class is available during the fall, winter and spring.

Shelter Building

Students will discuss different types of shelters and their uses.  They will construct a shelter as a group and explain the functions and benefits of their shelter in a survival situation.  This class is available during the fall, winter and spring.

Fire Building

Perhaps the oldest and certainly most iconic skill of camping, this class teaches students fire safety, primitive and modern methods of fire starting, and several styles of fire lay.  Working in small groups, students have the opportunity to practice their new skill and build their own camp fire.  This class is available during the fall, winter and spring.

Compass

Like Lewis and Clark exploring their way to the Pacific Coast, students learn the basics of the compass and pacing, and then test their knowledge and skills on the compass course.  This class is available during the fall, winter and spring.

Wilderness Survival

Students learn the four laws of survival, what to do when lost, and the importance of planning ahead and being prepared.  To test their new knowledge, students will work in groups to create an action plan for a survival scenario.  This class is available during the fall, winter and spring.

Geocaching

In this outdoor recreational sport, students are trained how to use GPS receivers to search for hidden contain containers called ‘geocaches’.  Students will practice navigation techniques while enjoying the thrill of a treasure hunt.  This class is available during the fall, winter and spring.
